Anonymous Email: What It Really Means
People arrive here wanting two very different things, and only one of them is what a temporary inbox does. This page is about telling them apart.
"Anonymous email" is searched for by two groups of people. The first wants to receive mail without handing a website their real address. The second wants to send a message without the recipient knowing who sent it.
Mailfornet does the first. It cannot do the second, and this page explains why that is deliberate rather than a missing feature.
Mailfornet is receive-only
You cannot send email from a Mailfornet address. There is no compose button and no way to reply. This is a design decision, not an oversight: a free service that let anyone send mail from a throwaway address would be used for spam, phishing and impersonation within hours, and every one of our domains would be blocklisted shortly after.
Receive-only also protects you. Because nothing can be sent from your address, nobody can impersonate you using it either.
What a disposable address actually protects
It keeps your real address out of one company's database. That is genuinely useful and it is not nothing — it is the difference between a shop knowing how to reach you forever and knowing nothing about you at all. It means your address does not end up on a marketing list, does not get sold on, and is not sitting in that company's records when they are breached.
What it does not do is hide you. Your IP address is still visible to the sites you visit. The content of anything you type is unchanged. And if you sign up to a forum with a throwaway address but post under a name people recognise, nothing has been concealed.
What it does not protect against
- It is not encryption. Email sent to a temporary inbox travels the same way as any other email. If the contents matter, a disposable address does not make them private.
- It is not protection from the law. A throwaway address does not make illegal activity untraceable, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
- It does not hide your location or device. That is what a VPN or Tor addresses, and neither is an email service.
- It does not make you anonymous to the site. If you pay with a card, give a delivery address or log in with a social account, the email address was never the identifying part.
If you want to send mail without using your main address
There are legitimate reasons — contacting a seller, reaching a support desk, writing to a landlord. Mailfornet is not the tool for it, so here is what is:
- A second mailbox you control. A free account with any mail provider, created for that purpose, can send and receive and can be abandoned later. It is the simplest honest answer.
- A Gmail alias. Mail sent to the alias reaches your own inbox, and you can reply from it. This is the right tool when you want to keep the conversation rather than end it.
- An encrypted mail provider if the contents are what matter. Several offer accounts that do not require personal details.
The honest summary
A temporary address is a good answer to "I do not want this website to have my real email". It is the wrong answer to "I do not want anyone to know who I am". Those two sentences sound similar and mean completely different things, and most of the confusion around anonymous email sits in the gap between them.
Common questions
Can I send an anonymous email from Mailfornet?
No. Mailfornet addresses are receive-only by design, so the service cannot be used to send spam, phishing or impersonation. If you need to send mail, a separate mailbox you control is the honest route.
Does a temporary email address make me anonymous?
It makes you anonymous to that one website's mailing list, which is a real but narrow benefit. It does not hide your IP address, your device or anything else you give the site.
Can anyone trace a temporary email address back to me?
The address itself carries no personal details, because none were asked for. But an address is only one signal among many — a payment, a delivery address or a linked account identifies you regardless of which inbox received the confirmation.
Is using an anonymous or disposable address legal?
In most countries, yes. Declining to give a shop your personal email is no different from declining to give it your phone number. Using an address for fraud, harassment or evading a ban is prohibited by our Terms of Service and is not made lawful by the tool.
Is my temporary inbox private from other people?
Your inbox opens only in the browser that created the address, so knowing the address is not enough to read the mail. Even so, a disposable inbox is not the place for anything personal or confidential.
